Falcons Battle I’Coast as AWC Begins

The 11th African Women’s Championship gets underway on Saturday hosts
Namibia taking on Zambia in the opening of the eight-nation tournament
Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek.

Namibia are featuring in the championship for the first but the Group
A clash against their East Africa opponents promises to be an
explosive affair.

But attention will be focused on the second Group A match between with
sixth-time champions Nigeria   Ivory Coast   at the same venue later
in the day.

Eight teams – Namibia, Zambia, South Africa, Ghana, Cameroon Ivory
Coast and Algeria are participating in the tournament which ends on
October 25. The best three teams will represent Africa at the 2015
FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada.

Super Falcons coach Edwin Okon will be looking to start their Namibia
2014 with eye-catching victory against their West African rivals.

“We’ve decided to take the games one at a time so we’re not thinking
of any other opponents than Ivory Coast,” Okon said before leading his
charges to Namibia during the week.

The Falcons will rely on the experience of veterans Perpetua Nkwocha,
Precious Dede and Stella Mbachu to win the title for the seventh time.

Nigeria won the competition in 1991, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004,
2006 and 2010. Equatorial Guinea are the defending champions. They won
the tournament on home soil in 2008 and 2012.

The Falcons take on Zambia in their second match of the completion on
October 14.
