Brazil were 2-0 victors over Argentina on Saturday in the 96th clash between the two South American football giants since 1914.
It was Barcelona’s Neymar and Lionel Messi that led out their teams at the expansive Birds Nest in Beijing, China but it was Diego Tardelli (an Argentine sounding name) that settled the match with two goals – one in the fisrt half and another in the second.
And it was Neymar that came out the victor though it could have been so different if Messi had put away a customary penalty in the 40th minute but his shot was tame and Jefferson parried away.
-Neymar had told journalists before the match that he and Messi had been teasing each other on what the outcome of the match would be.
“We’ve been making a game of it. We both say our team is going to win,” Mundo Deportivo reported.
“I tell him he can score two or three goals but Brazil will still win.”
But Argentina dominated the start of proceedings though they could not make any headway and against the run of play, returnee striker, Tardelli capitalised on a mix up between Manchester City team mates Martin Demichelis and Pablo Zabeleta and the Mineiro striker nicked in to shoot past Romero on 28 minutes.
Tardelli doubled the lead on 64 minutes as he got on the end of a flick-on by David Luis to nod home the ball and double Brazil's advantage.
So the rivalry stats now read: Argentina on 36 victories, Brazil also with 36 wins with 24 matches ending all square.
