Ahead of the 2015 general elections, a 71-man Campaign Council for the Delta State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been inaugurated.
Chairman of the Party in the state, Chief Edwin Uzor performed the inauguration ceremony of the Council made up of eminent and tested politicians.
Speaking at the occasion which took place at Government House, Asaba yesterday evening, Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan said it was important for the party to start early preparations for the 2015 general elections, noting that elections come with a lot of challenges.
He said that the Campaign Council was the apex policy making body of the campaign committees for the elections which were being compiled.
“The Campaign Council is the policy making body of all our campaign committees,” Governor Uduaghan said and urged all those who lost in the primaries of the PDP to sheath their differences and work for the interest of the party.
According to him, “Delta State is a PDP state, there is no doubt about that, but we must be united, we must put our house in order to enable us win in the general elections, we must put everything that happened during the primary elections behind us, we must ensure that the President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan wins in Delta State, we must ensure Dr Okowa wins because we must have PDP President and PDP Governor and all our candidates must win in the elections.”
“This is a PDP state, our determination is to ensure adequate peace and security which we enjoyed before the party primaries because, there is no office that is so important that somebody has to die, those who did not win today, please, let us take it easy, let us support the party’s candidates to win in the general elections,” he said.
He thanked aspirants who contested in the primaries of the PDP for their steadfastness, noting that “so far, nobody has moved out of our party as a result of the primaries, we are moving forward as a political party and we must remain united.”
Chief Uzo while inaugurating the Council, appealed to members of the Party who contested in the primaries to continuously work in the interest of the party, asserting that the party will always lay emphasis on the welfare of the people.
He urged all the members of the party to engage on issue-based campaigns.
“Our campaigns should be issue-based devoid of ethnic sentiments,” the chairman said at the occasion noting that members of the Campaign Council were well selected because of the roles they were expected to play.
Chief Uzor is the Chairman of the Campaign Council which have Dr Joseph Otumara as Secretary.
